What is your availability?

Most estimates are done Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm with hourly slots.

Because we typically work in residential areas, our teams perform work typically between the hours of 8:30 am -3:30 pm to try and mitigate disturbances to neighbors. Tree care related emergencies are scheduled on a case by case basis, depending on severity.

What causes a tree to have problems?

Most landscape tree and shrub problems are due to environmental factors such as poor growing conditions, temperature extremes, poor water management, soil compaction or mechanical injury. Poor environmental conditions can cause a tree stress, resulting in trees being more susceptible to pests and diseases.

What time of year is the best time to prune? Does it depend on the type of tree?

Because pruning creates wounds on a tree it is optimal to prune deciduous trees in the winter. (Fruit tree especially benefit from January-February pruning.) When a tree is working to grow leaves in the spring it can't devote enough energy to healing pruning wounds, resulting in tree stress and opening a tree up to problems.

Why shouldn't you top trees? What do you recommend instead?

Topping is the indiscriminate cutting of tree branches to stubs or to lateral branches that are not large enough to assume the terminal pole. It is often used to reduce the size of a tree.

Topping the tree removes 50-100% of a tree's leaf bearing crown which are the food factories of the tree. Removing them can temporarily starve a tree and trigger various survival mechanisms.

Recommended techniques for reducing the height include pruning back larger limbs to lateral branches large enough to assume the terminal role. This method of branch reduction helps to preserve the natural form of the tree.
